As you will see in the diagram, your options for support- consulting, therapy, mentoring, and coaching- vary in two dimensions. The first of these dimensions is the focus of the effort. Are you primarily attempting to understand a problem, or are you designing a solution? Consulting and therapy both tend to have an existing problem at their center, whereas mentoring and coaching are more likely to be geared toward developing solutions. The other dimension to the diagram concerns who is doing the work. In consulting and mentoring, the client relies on the provider to give them the answers- to “tell” them what to do. In contrast, therapists and coaches help clients discover their own answers through guided questioning.
Each of these methods is valid and has its place, and approaches can be used to complement each other. At LG Solutions Group, I specialize in the solutions side of the graphic- mentoring and coaching.
